1993 NSW AAGPS Head of the River

Kings rule again in Head Of The River (Sydney Morning Herald, 04 Apr 1993)

The Kings School eight caused an upset when they beat Newington to win the GPS Head of the River on the Nepean River at Penrith yesterday. After a lengthy delay before the start to replace a fin on Newington’s boat, Kings edged out the favourites by 3.27secs.

St. Joseph’s were another 6.12secs behind in third place, with Grammar fourth. Kings clocked 7m24.07s for the 2400m after Newington had led by a boat length with one kilometre remaining.

The win was a triumph for Kings’ coach and dual Olympic Islay Lee, who foiled Newington’s bid for a record-equaling fifth straight win. Lee, who represented at the Montreal and Moscow Games, was trained by Newington coach and Mexico silver medallist Michael Morgan.

“The quiet guys got there,” said Lee, in reference to Newington’s highly publicized buildup for their record-equaling assault on Kings’ five successive wins in the early 80s.
