The 1984 SA Head of the River distances changed to the following: 1500m for Boys VIIIs, 750m for U15 Boys, 500m for U15 Girls & U14 Boys, and 1000m for all other events.

The 1980 SA Head of the River featured the following events:
- Boys First Eight
- Boys Second Eight
- Boys & Girls Open Four
- Boys Open Lightweight Four
- Boys Under 16 Four
- Boys & Girls Under 15 Four
- Boys Under 14 Four
In the Boys First Eights, Christian Bothers College took out their first ever win with a 1½ length win over Prince Alfred College. Their first regatta was almost 20 years earlier in 1961. In other boys races, the winners were shared somewhat evenly; Scotch, Unley High, St. Peter's Pulteney Grammar and Prince Alfred all recorded wins. Meanwhile, Unley High School (B) won the Open Girls Four and Adelaide High School won the Under 15 Girls Four.
