1978 South Australian Schools' Head of the River

The 1978 Head of the River was momentous as it was the first time schoolgirls raced at the regatta, with the introduction of the Girls Open Four (750m) and Girls Under 15 Four (350m).
Unley High School raced for the first time for both boys and girls in 1978. Also, multiple divisions (i.e. A, B) within a category was introduced, as seen in the Boys Under 16, 15 and 14 Fours.

Pulteney Grammar School won the Boys First Eight for the second-straight year in a time of 4 min 40 sec, just 1 metre ahead of Christian Brothers College. Meanwhile, in the inaugural schoolgirl regatta, Scotch College won the Girls Open Four and Unley High School won the Girls Under 15 Four.
