2001 World Junior Championships– Duisburg Germany

Selection and Training

Following the completion of the Interstate Championships held at Wivenhoe Dam QLD, the selection trials were held from 4th - 6th May at Penrith. The trials were conducted in excellent conditions and after 2 days of racing the team was announced.

The crews were again selected on the basis of being from the one State to allow training in their home State and so minimise disruption to education. The men's coxless four trained in Hobart TAS, the men's coxed four in Brisbane and the women's crews in Sydney.

Each athlete had to contribute $7,000 to form part of the team.

The Championships were conducted in Duisburg Germany from 7th to 11th August 2001.  The team undertook a training camp at Hazewinkel in Belgium

Despite Australia entering only five crews, it finished tenth overall in the medal tally with one gold and two silver medals.

Scott Brennan raced to perfection winning the heat and semi-final comfortably and by large margins. However the British sculler Matthew Langridge raced better than him on the finals day taking gold and leaving silver to Scott Brennan. Scott Brennan put in a great middle 1000 metres to bridge the gap and lead into the last 500 metre but that effort was too great to retain sufficient energy in the final part of the race. Langridge was able to regain the lead and win from the gallant and tiring Brennan.

The Australians were well beaten by the crew from Belarus and eventual silver medalists in the heat. They raced well in the repechage to win comfortably. Unfortunately they had a tough fight with the Italians in the semi-final which they narrowly lost and were relegated to the B final which they won. It was tight race throughout in this B final with the Australians leading by a narrow margin throughout. To the line, the fast finishing Belgium crew threw everything at the Australians but were withstood, albeit narrowly.

The Australian four were unfortunately off the pace in the heat and repechage - fourth in the heat and last in the repechage. The B Final racing and result were strong but too late. The Australians were determined to reverse previous performances and raced strongly throughout the final B. They only narrowly led at the 1000m mark but through controlled racing increased their lead to 2.4 secs at the finish.

The Australians warmed up after the heat winning their repechage and comfortably qualifying through the semifinal in the third fastest time in clearly the fastest semi by far. It was the Italians who surprised the Australians in the final in a good performance leaving the Australians out of the medals by 0.6 second. The Russians and Germans created a margin over the rest of the field and so the Australians were battling for the bronze. The Australians were in third place through most of the race but could not match the sprint of the Italians to the finish.
