Selection

The selectors again agreed to send crews who both won their event and were of an adequate standard. This crew from Western Australia won their National Championship against good opposition which included many future Australian representatives.

Racing

The men's four performed impressively in the heat but were outclassed by stronger crews in the final. Marilyn Kidd looked good in the heat and a likely medal prospect after winning her heat in the second fastest time. However in the semi-final, nerves overcame her and she broke twice at the start and was disqualified. The men's pair were surprised in their heat by an Italian crew and were forced into a repechage which they won well. The East Germans were clearly the best crew there and had the gold sewn up. The Soviets and Italians were the next best crew. Unfortunately the predicted order was not broken by the Australians who rowed to form and had to settle for fourth placing.
