1980 FISA Championships for Juniors– Hazewinkel Belgium

1980 Junior and Lightweight teams

The combined junior and lightweight teams

Selection

The Australian Rowing Council made the decision to again test the waters with the Junior Championships. The winning men's junior four crew at the National Championships was offered this opportunity to compete. Being the combined lightweight and junior championships, other Australians would be competing and so they would have the benefit of support and management. The crew was based around the National Championship Junior Four winning Perth & Collegians crew from WA. Peter Shakespeare was a co-coach of this crew but moved to Canberra for work reasons in 1981, thus precluding him from continuing his assistance to the crew.

Racing

The Australians finished sixth out of a field of 16 but had hoped for more. Australian Rowing magazine at the time stated "that crabs at halfway are said not to have helped." It is reported elsewhere that they started badly and thereafter could not find their rhythm. It was a valuable foray into these championships and valuable to again assess this event.
