All crews improved with the international competition and during the regatta. The lack of international competition was obvious according to some of the coaches on this team.

Hooker had a great semi-final winning in the fastest time. In the final he under rated the other scullers and whilst he raced well, he did not quite have the boat speed of the Russian and East German scullers. It was a fine performance by the Australian sculler.

The Australians were in mid field through the 1000 metre mark but uncharacteristically faded in the last 500 metres as other crews improved. The crew was not quite strong enough in the sprint home to medal.

The girls won their heat after a nervous start and thus progressed straight to the final. The conditions on the final day were not good and the more experienced European crews handled the conditions better than the Australians.
