1985 World Junior Championships– Brandenburg East Germany

1985 Men's Junior Four

1985 Men's Junior Four

Selection

The men's four from the Mercantile Rowing Club won the National Junior Four Championship in a record time of 4:53.0. The men's pair from Commercial Rowing Club also won their Championship. Both crews were adjudged to be of sufficient standard to be a medal prospect at the Junior Championships.

Racing

The four, which hailed from Mercantile Rowing Club in Melbourne, drew the toughest heat and semi final and so had a tough road to the final. The semi final required them to eliminate one of the early favourites, the Soviets. It was true semi-final racing with 0.59 seconds covering the 2nd to 4th placings with the favourites East Germany 2.5 seconds in front of all others. Unfortunately the final was raced in adverse conditions with lanes 1-3 getting a significant advantage. Accordingly what was planned to be tight racing became a procession.

The pair from Commercial Rowing Club in Brisbane gained a good preparation and enjoyed the racing at the Copenhagen regatta wining four races from four starts. The racing was good for confidence but did not provide the tight competition required. Their heat was a good race with Belgium first, Australia a close second and the eventual winners West Germany in third place. The cross head breeze in the final unfortunately spread the field.
