The Romanian crew was going to be unbeatable and the East Germans and Bulgarians had beaten the Australians in the preliminary races. Accordingly the Australians were on form due to come fourth. However the crew had different ideas and raced brilliantly to get a bronze. They were placed fourth after 500 metres and then rowed through the Bulgarians in the second 500 metres and then rowed further away for a bronze. Ahead of them was a great struggle between the Romanians and East Germans which resulted in a narrow win for the Romanians.
