1996 World Junior Championships– Strathclyde Scotland

Selection

Of the seven junior crews, five made the finals and four won medals. This was a pleasing change from the disaster in Poland in 1995 with the food poisoning denying so many opportunities to Australian junior rowers. The selection process included an appeal against the non-selection of the men's junior coxless four. The crew was subsequently selected, won silver and was only a whisker off a gold medal. This year both extensive trials and the Trans Tasman Junior Series were used to select the team.

Reside had suffered food poisoning at 1995 Championships, Ross River fever early in 1996 and had a sensitive back. He probably should not have made it to the Championships with that history.

With astute coaching and adherence to race plans, he made the final. His comments on the race quoted in Australian Rowing were: When I got to the 1000 metres, I had a full tank. I decided on a progressive build up – Nick [Garrett] said I was rating 29 strokes per minute – it felt higher. The boat was singing over the flat water – I put on more power. Reside hit the lead at the 15000 metre mark and despite a strong challenge by the Belarus sculler, finished in front by 0.79 second with the fancied Greek sculler Lekkos in third place.

They had to make the last 500 metres exceptional and they did – a 1:34 for the last 500 metres, some 4 seconds faster than any other crew. The three man Leigh Chapman was quoted in Australian Rowing as saying: "We had practised our finish and at 500m to go, Neil called for more power. It was amazing – the boat surged and our rhythm under pressure was unreal." The crew missed out on gold by 0.03 second.
