1989 Australian University Championships— National Water Sports Centre Carrum VIC

These Championships were conducted on 7- 8th July 1989 at the new course at Carrum Victoria. The conditions on the finals day were bad with gusty cross winds which made starting and rowing very difficult.

Melbourne University again won the Centenary Cup easily with 132 points, followed by Queensland 58 points, LaTrobe 32 points, Monash 29 points, Adelaide 20 points, Sydney 19 points, ADFA 8, UNSW 5 and Macquarie 0.

Sprint races were conducted on 5th July.

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology raced by invitation and finished second. They were regarded as favourites as they included James Tomkins and Mal Batten and were coached by Noel Donaldson. However they were given the disadvantaged lane 7 with Monash on the other side of the course on lane 2.
