Thirteen universities competed in the men's championships making it the largest ever Intervarsity regatta. For the first time, all men's Championships were raced over 2000 metres and the regatta expanded to run over three days to allow for heats, repechages and finals. The new event of men's pair racing for the Carlton & United Goblets was added. The men's championships were hosted by Monash University and whilst well run, competitors did not enjoy the cold and windy weather.

The women's championships were hosted by the University of Western Australia. It was conducted on the Canning River course. The Sydney girls arrived early to enable them to race in the local Pennant Regatta. Newcastle arrived on the Saturday night. The University of Western Australia Boat Club June newsletter described the event as follows: The regatta was a homely, casual affair - good crowds and a good showing from the supporting women's and men's crews from other local clubs. Unlike the men's regatta, only three universities competed but fortunately the weather was good with only a slight side breeze.

Images from these championships can be found on the Australian Rowing Images website.
