1992 World Lightweight Championships- Montreal Canada

1992 was a great year for Australian rowing. Not only did the lightweights win 2 gold medals, but the Olympic team won two gold medals and our juniors one gold and three silvers. This tally placed us as the second most successful rowing nation in the world.

The success of the Olympic team lifted hopes and expectations for medals by our lightweights and juniors. For our women's four they finally won a deserved gold medal at world championships after years of minor placings in this event.

As with other years the preparation had its difficulties. The women's lightweight four lost Debbie Fox following selection but she was ably replaced by Elizabeth Moller in her international debut.

The successful lightweight quad of 1990 and 1991 was disbanded due to Stephen Hawkins's Olympic selection. The resultant double scull raced at Lucerne successfully providing the necessary confidence to the athletes to repeat their gold medal success of previous years in this boat.

The use of Australian boats took a further step forward with boats being shipped to North America and towed to the regatta by the team from the west coast. In the past, time considerations forced the team to airfreight Australian boats to their destination.
