1976 FISA Lightweight & Junior Championships- Villach Austria
Although the AARC, in the end, decided to focus all its attention and funding on the Olympic team and not select crews for these championships, lightweights were called up for the selection trials.
The outstanding lightweight crew of that year was the Mercantile four of Terry Thurtell, lan Porter, Peter MacCartney and John Hawkins.
This crew refused to attend the trials saying that they had already proven themselves for selection. These controversial circumstances perhaps made the AARC's decision to focus on the Olympic Games somewhat easier.
The Championship was combined with the Juniors for the first time.
