Men's Eight

Men's Eight — Gold Medal Presentation

To win not one but two gold medals at a World Championship was a first for Australian rowing. The team had a perfect lead up regatta at the Commonwealth Games where it achieved great success. By the time of the World Championships the men's eight was in a fine condition, Peter Antonie was feeling good and Reinhold Batschi was smiling.

The selectors had originally wanted Peter Antonie in the lightweight four. Peter insisted on one more chance sculling and it paid off handsomely.

The eights final went to plan, namely to stay with the Soviet crew until 1000m and then to move away. The race was won by 1 1/2 lengths.

Peter Antonie's race was very tight. Any one of the finalists was a contender for the medal. The final margin of 0.02 seconds in a barnstorming finish was a testament to how tough his race was with BjornEltang (DEN).

The men's and women's lightweight four performed well. Adair Ferguson was disappointed with her row but overall it was a great year for Australian rowing.
