NSW Schoolgirls Head of the River
The Betty Deer Rosebowl – Overall Pointscore
The Betty Deer Rosebowl for the overall pointscore in the NSW Schoolgirls Head of the River Regatta was established in 1991 but first competed for in 1992.
Betty Deer (nee Whitney) was born in Drummoyne in 1910 and attended Sydney Girls High completing the Leaving Certificate in 1927. She was a keen member of the Sydney Girls Old Girls Union and maintained many strong friendships throughout her life with girls she first met there. After her marriage in 1936, she gave up work with MLC Assurance and lived in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide during the years in which her four children were born. The family returned to Sydney in 1947. She participated in many voluntary activities, working for the girl guides, boy scouts and schools her children attended. She was an active gardener and enjoyed bridge and golf.
She lived for her family and was a strong influence on the life of her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was especially proud of her eldest grandchild, Jane Spring, when Jane won the NSW Lightweight Sculls title and the Australian Lightweight Double Scull Championship. The Betty Deer Rosebowl prize was established by her husband Sir Frederick Deer and their children, Professor Christine Deer, Patricia Deer and Rosalind Strong to honour her memory after her death in 1990.
