1994 VIC Head of Schoolgirls' Regatta
The host school in 1994 St Catherine's College. It was an important year for the regatta, being the tenth.
24 events were competed for with quad sculling being a growing boat class.
This year in her President's report, Susie Palfreyman reflected on the role of the Head of the Schoolgirl's Committee noting that the main function of the Head of the Schoolgirls committee is to oversee the running of the H.O.S. regatta. She went onto say: Along with the task of overseeing the regatta this committee also decides on policies and events which concern this regatta. One of our major policy decisions this year was to address the problem relating to the division into which crews should be entered.
But such day to day policies do not reflect the importance of the role of the Committee in other ways. Susie went onto to describe far more strategic plans. It has long been a trend to use sculling as a means of introducing rowing to beginners. Traditionally rowing in Victoria has been dominated by sweep oared boats for all levels. It is a long tern plan of this committee to establish sculling as a feasible alternative to sweep oared rowing.
Whilst the change to sculling for beginners was already underway, the Head of the Schoolgirl's Committee played a significant role in this transition and deserve praise for their work.
The Committee also held an information seminar in November 1993 to discuss all relevant matters to the Committee from regatta issues to talent identification, maturation of schoolgirls and motivation of athletes.
