History of World Rowing Under 23 Championships

2024 World Under 23 Championships— St Catharines, Canada

The World Under 23 Championships were conducted in conjunction with the non-Olympic senior categories and World Under 19 Championships at St Catharines finishing on the weekend of 24th and 25th August 2024. Australia was not represented in the senior events.

The highlights were plenty but the gold medal for our lightweight scull Grace Sypher stood out. She raced well and was well prepared. Congratulations.

On 24th June 2024, Rowing Australia reported on the US selections as follows:

The Under 23 Men’s and Women’s Eights have been confirmed for the upcoming Under 23 World Championships, completing the full lineup of crews set to compete in St. Catherines, Canada, from August 18-23.

This marks the first time Australia has entered two Eights selected from the US College program. These athletes are currently training in Princeton and will depart for Australia this weekend.

After a week at home, both crews will commence training in Canberra at the Reinhold Batschi Men's National Training Centre from Monday, July 8.

They will then head back to Princeton on July 30 for a two-week training camp with the rest of the U23 Squad before traveling to St. Catherines.

“It was pleasing to see 24 of our US-based athletes and four coxswains come together on a training camp and selection trials at Princeton University,” Head of Pathways Jason Lane said.

“After completing ergometer testing and on-water trials I am excited by the talent that was present and delighted to be able to select a Men’s and Women’s Eight to represent Australia at the U23 World championships in August.”

In a notable highlight, Ben Scott and Drew Weightman will be rowing together in the Men's Eight.

Their fathers, Rob Scott OLY (former RA President) and Dave Weightman OLY, famously rowed the Pair together, winning a Silver Medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

Of interest was the incredibly close finish in the heat of the women's eight where the USA crew defeated the Australian crew by a matter of a couple of 1000th second, a millimeter or two. Whilst times are only recorded to 100th second, photo finish equipment can take it down to 1000th second to determine a race. Photo courtesy of World Rowing.
