SA were the early leaders followed by NSW and VIC. By the half way mark NSW narrowly took the lead from SA. The fast finishing Victorians caught the New South Welshmen close to the line to win by 1/2 canvas with SA a half a length further back.
Selection issues were significant in the winning Victorian crew. Banks Rowing Club won the Victorian Championship Eight following the disqualification of Mercantile Rowing Club. The State selectors named the Mercantile coach Hubert Frederico as State coach and four Banks members were named in the squad. Banks withdrew their four squad members, namely Paul Guest, Brian Vear, David Ramage and David Lean in protest of their coach Alan Jacobsen not being the named coach. It was customary at that time that the winning coach would become the Satet coach. The Banks Rowing Club then sought approval to challenge the selected crew. Banks Club Captain Jim Hardie is quoted as having stated that he was confident that Banks had a crew which could beat the present State crew. The Victorian Rowing Association did not allow the challenge and the winning Victorian crew had no Banks Rowing Club representatives.
