NSW were the early leaders in this race but were quickly overhauled by Victoria by the mile mark. Victoria and NSW set the same rating of 34 but Victoria drew away over the rest of the race. The media called for the NSW crew to have their nomination for the Olympic Games withdrawn in favour of the Victorian crew. However the Australian selector Joe Gould maintained his faith in the crew. The crew had taken their travel injections just prior to this race and several had suffered badly from them including stroke Phil Cayzer.
