History of Barwon Rowing Club
Chapter 8 - Hard All to the End 1970-1990
Although this history of the Barwon Rowing Club finishes with its 120th year, any record of the club's past achievements would not be complete without mention of "Mr Barwon", William Grose. Bill joined the club in December 1920. He was first elected a committee member in 1923 and served in that capacity until 1925. The following year he was elected vice-captain, a position he held for six years. In 1933 he was elected captain, eventually retiring in 1961 after having set a Victorian record for service in that position. Bill was the coach of more than 120 winning crews, as well as the club's representative on the Geelong Rowing Association for nine years. Together with his wife Muriel, as long serving president of the Ladies and Social committees, they embodied the spirit of the club; one of loyalty and affection and of fond remembrance for the many happy times, both on the river and with fellow rowers.
Bill Grose died in December 1992.
