Petition presented for removal of the Breakwater. It was decided that in the absence of any information to show how this would affect the level of the river, the club in the meantime preferred to put up with the inconvenience.

A discussion arose as to whether gentlemen giving £5 donations to the outrigger fund should be considered life members, but it was decided to postpone the consideration.

The outrigger from Oxford arrived in good order about Christmas, but through carelessness in unloading it was se riously damaged. After some trouble, we had the damage repaired at the expense of the stevedore.
SEASON 1876-1877

Your committee would earnestly call upon the rowing members to redouble their exertions and practice as assisdu¬ously as possible, so that in after years they may recall with pride and gratification the days when they belonged to the old club, and how in many a hard fought contest they helped to uphold its honor and carry its colours to the front. The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the club's gardener.

The rowing season was formally opened with the customary picnic to Queen's Park. The weather was all that could be desired and the members with their guests from the kindred clubs from the Grammar School, College and Corio Bay, after having partaken of an al fresco repast beneath the spreading foliage of the pines, enthusiastically entered into the various sports provided. A start was made for home and a paddle down with wind and current in the cool of the evening brought to a successful termination a most pleasant outing.

The members should definitely decide as to whether selection should be left entirely to the captain or a selection committee. It was agreed after some discussion that the selection committee should consist of the captain, vice-captain and Messrs Buckland & Wright. An interesting discussion as to whether a permenant "coach" should be appointed followed.

The captain deplored the tendency now prevailing among club athletes of expecting the club of which they were active members to pay their expenses and subscriptions. He hoped that none of the rowing men would become tarnished with the objectionable practice

The captain attributed a good deal of the laxity in regard to the regular payment of subscriptions to the latitude al¬lowed playing members by football clubs. Many such members were permitted to hold the idea that they were do¬ing their club a favour by playing for it, instead of regarding it as an honour to be allowed to represent it on the field.
