Yarra Challenge Cup


History

At the inaugural meeting of the Association held at "Dunraven", Clendon Road, Toorak, the residence of George Fairbairn, on 6 May 1903, it was agreed that "subscriptions be invited for the purpose of securing Challenge Cups; that the rules be those of the Henley-on-Thames Regatta and that the Cups be a facsimile of those rowed for at Henley.

Description

A two handled urn-shaped sterling silver cup, supported on a circular base by a short knopped stem. The base handles are in the form of swans with wings displayed facing outwards from the cup. The base is encircled by a band of embossed foliate decoration. The lower portion of the bowl is embossed with floral and foliate motifs. The upper portion of the bowl is decorated by wide shallow fluting. On the front of the bowl is an embossed inscription YARRA CHALLENGE CUP and embossed on the rear is the Melbourne Amateur Regatta emblem. 

Inscriptions 

The upper portion of the bowl is engraved with the names of the winners of the event from 1904 until 1932. 

Marks

The hallmarks for Sheffield 1903/4 and the Makers Mark for Walker & Hall are struck on the upper portion of the bowl.
