Wilkinson was originally from Melbourne and raced for Trinity College at Melbourne University before moving to the UK.

Wilkinson became a significant rower in English and University rowing for several years. He was a key rower and administrator at Brasenose College Oxford. He is also reported to have been a coach at that college.
