He as a prominent doctor and politician, (member for Richmond).

From the 1971/72 YYRC Annual Report:-

The Hon Lawrence Smith (died 8/7/1910) was the “senior member of the Legislative Assembly by 1894 and also gained prominence through other community activities.

One-time YYRC president (1882-1884) and medical practitioner Louis Lawrence Smith (1830-1910) was at the foremost of traditional herbal medicine with his vegemite pills, as advertised in the Castlemaine Mt Alexander Mail on February 23 1857. According to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, Dr Smith thought nothing of spending $3,000 a year on newspaper advertising, arguing that it showed the worth of his qualifications and thus exposed quacks, Dr Smith went on to become an MP in Melbourne.
