John F Roche

Yarra Yarra Rowing Club (VIC)

John Frederick Roche 29 Nov 1966 - 26 June 2006

John lived a shorter but full life despite suffering from cystic fibrosis his whole life. Surviving to the age of 39, which is a long life for such sufferers of CF, he died as a result of complications from a lung transplant.

After learning his coxing craft at Xavier College, John joined Yarra Yarra in 1992. He continued to cox but is best remembered as a great coach and fondly known as Coach Roche.

Peter Gill recalls that he was a very funny man with a wicked sense of humour. Even though his future was gloomy, he never complained about anything and was positive. He fought his complaint with grit, courage and determination.

Added to his coxing and coaching endeavours, John also served on the Club Committee for four years 1995-99. A boat was named in his honor and an annual YYRC trophy also bears his name.

The tribute from the Club on his death was insightful, highlighting his optimism, humour, patience and passion.
