Unexpected changes

By Ceri B

As many of you may have read, we were saddened to learn that Jackie Petley, Fiona Woodard and Andrew Nicholls have decided to step down from their roles on the committee.

The club as a whole and the committee thank them for their service to the club, I’m sure we all appreciate the years of dedication and hard work they have put in. Between them, they have contributed well over three decades of service to Yarra Yarra Rowing Club. The club is such a healthy position due to the labours of like-minded individuals who have volunteered a considerable amount of their time.

Jackie Petley

Jackie became a member in 2012/13 season, she was Communications manager for 3 years, from 2016 until 2019. For at least two of these years, she also held the position of vice captain. She took on the role of Captain for the 2019/20 season, and continued in the role during COVID, steering the club through the unchartered waters of lockdowns, COVID restrictions and its many impacts on the sport.

Christening of the ‘Jackie Petley’

On Saturday September 23rd we gathered in front of the YYRC boat shed to celebrate a boat christening for popular member and dedicated former captain of the club, Jackie Petley.

Jack Chatz spoke of the great contribution made by Jackie to YYRC over a number of years, in several Committee roles, cumulating in a stint most recently as Captain of boats from season 2019/20 to season 2022/23.

The boat has already been seeing use by a number of crews, including the development squad, it’s forward facing cox seat making it an ideal boat to cox and coach at the same time for development crews.

When the ceremonies were done, and the champagne bottle had been broken, distributing its sticky contents all over the boat, then true to form, Jackie had to make sure the boat was thoroughly washed and cleaned – try as some of the members might, Jackie would not be deterred or dissuaded from doing it herself. There’s dedication!
