By 1870, the competition for the Grand Challenge Cup at the Melbourne Regatta was fierce and three brothers from the Richmond Rowing Club made their mark in their club’s Grand Challenge Cup crews of 1870 and 1871. They were superb competitors and winners of many of the few races on offer.

Initially four brothers raced in the 1860s but one (John) dropped out. We recognise three of the Mitchell brothers as superb oarsmen of their day.
