1897 oar J B Lockington trophy oar

The oar presented to J B Lockington, who rowed 3 in the 1897 Intercolonial eights race for Western Australia (which were 2nd to Victoria) has an interesting history.

It was offered to our club by a relative who had kept safely at his home for many years

J. Lockington was 3 and Alick Chamley was 7 in the Yarra Yarra crew that won the 1895 Champion eight of Victoria race.

After being in the winning 1895 Championships J B Lockington went to Western Australia seeking gold, He joined a rowing club in WA, and by 1897 he gained selection in the WA eight, partly so his journey to Melbourne would be paid for because he was rowing for WA.

James Donald stroked the W A crew. James Donald who had been in WA, seeking gold, came to Victoria by ship but was so seasick on the voyage, he returned to WA on a pushbike together with some others in the crew.

Alick Chamley rowed in the 5 seat of the Victorian crew that defeated the WA eight.
