John commenced his rowing at Hale School in Perth. He was selected into 1959 crew by first time State eight coach Ken Grant. He was only one of two oarsmen retained for the winning 1960 crew.

1959 – Interstate Men’s Eight Championship five seat – Third

1960 – Interstate Men’s Eight Championship two seat – First

1960 – Olympic Games – Men’s Eight three seat - eliminated in repechage
