Alfred G Kuhne

Antwerp Rowing Club (VIC)

Alfred Gerhard Kuhne was born at Katyil Victoria. He enlisted for WWI in 57th Battalion on 17th May 1916 at the age of 19 years old. He was a labourer.

Given her German heritage, three members of the Antwerp Confidential Committee signed that A G Kuhne was a truly loyal and fit person to join our forces. The attestation went on to state: He is a protestant and his late father was an agent and wheat buyer who was buried by a Church of England Minister. We do not question this young mans loyalty.

Sadly he went missing in action in France on 27th September 1917. His body was not found and a Court of Inquiry on 3rd November 1917 pronounced him killed in action.

In 2017, the Dimboola Memorial Secondary College unveiled a plaque and planted a tree for Alfred. The tree is alongside the existing World War I section of the drive.
