What’s a picture of Zara doing in thee History Corner? Well, it’s very much a case of ‘like mother, like daughter’, it seems. Whilst Zara Kfouri has been trying out for junior nationals selection at Penrith in N S W, an article from ‘The Age’ has emerged which demonstrates exactly where she got her love of rowing and obvious talent for the sport. Back in the day, when rowing made the sports pages of the Age, coverage of the Yarra Yarra regatta held in October 1991 shows a jubilant Binky Hall (Zara’s mum) with her crew after winning women’s open fours. The crew, made up of Fiona Sutherland, Binky Hall, Ros Carter and Mandy Loftus-hills were coxed by Fiona Morris. The crew were all either international or interstate representatives at the time, and coached by Rob Jones, who was well-known in the 1990’s for his very strong juniors program. Sound familiar? In fact Binky and her crew were racing another Yarra Yarra crew that day for line honours – a crew with Gina Douglas in it! At the time Gina was only in her second season of rowing and we all know went on to represent Australia. Binky joined YYRC sometime in 1988 (through Lauriston) but left in early 1992 when she moved overseas. Another family connection to YYRC through her cousin, John Roach.
