Vale William Henry Holmes (Billy Holmes) – 20 August 1931 – 20 March 2006

Bill or Billy Holmes passed away in his holm on Monday 20 March 2006 at the Royal Melbourne Hospital after a long illness.

Bill was an honorary life member of Yarra Yarra, an honour bestowed on him in the 1980’s for his continued and generous support to the club over many years.

For many years a happy trio of the late Geoff Clegg, and club patron Ted Woolcock travelled to regattas around Victoria and interstate.

Yarra Yarra was pleased to honour Bill and his family’s wishes on spreading his ashes on the Yarra River between Richmond and Yarra Yarra rowing clubs, courtesy of a four coxed by Ted Woolcock, and stroked by Jack Chatziyakoumis with Stuart Critchell, gags Gallacher, and Rachel Cusack, in 3, 2, and bow seat respectively on Sunday 10 April 2006.

Bill will be sadly missed by his many friends at Yarra Yarra and our sincere condolences go out to his family. Easy Oar Billy, lest we forget.

The idea for this history originated from the Olympic Rowing and World Senior Rowing Championship histories written by Andrew Guerin and Margot Foster in 1991, 1992 & 1993 for the Australian team handbooks. Andrew Guerin developed and extended these histories to the current format in 2004 for publication in 2004 and then expanded the site.

Steve Roll has been an invaluable contributor to the website in locating errors and finding Christian names of rowers. His superb work is acknowledged.
