Mike J Grant

Yarra Yarra Rowing Club (VIC) and Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC)

Mike joined the Club in the 1973/74 season. He passed away on 26/4/2010.

His entry to the club came via the Melbourne Rugby Club and was one of several members who came through path.

His administrative activities were important.

In his honour, a double scull was named in 1991 in recognition of his services to the club.

He has only recorded win:

1986 - Nagambie veteran regatta, veteran “D” four (2) 

The following comes from the Yarra Yarra Rowing Club newsletter the Yarra Yabbie no 39 1991-3-20:-

The club has purchased a one year old coxless pair/double scull from Queensland (down for selection trials) and it be christened “Michael Grant” former Captain and resident chippie.

From the 2009/10 annual report:-

Michael (The Doctor) Grant passed away on 26th April 2010, after 12 months of illness, “Doc” joined Yarra in 1973/74 season from Melbourne Rugby Union Club from when Yarra recruited a number of members including Ron (Mitch) Mitchell.

“Doc” found success in a number of careers which prevented him from rowing from time to time. “Doc” returned to Yarra Yarra after breaking a leg in rugby and became captain of Yarra Yarra in 1985/86 and remained captain for a further 3 years before transferring to Albert Park South Melbourne club where he was captain for a year. “Doc” eventually returned to Yarra where he was of great assistance around the new clubhouse.

Vale Michael Grant

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Michael Grant, a long standing member of YYRC and captain of boats from 1985 to 1989. Michael passed away on Monday 19th April. A tribute to Michael and his years of service to the club will be included in the AGM report. He will be greatly missed by us all.

Michael Grant

Michael (The Doctor) Grant passed away on 26th April 2012, after twelve months of illness, “Doc” joined Yarra Yarra in 1973/74 season from the Melbourne Rugby Union club from whom Yarra recruited a number of members including Ron (Mitch) Mitchell.

“Doc” found success in a number of careers which prevented him from rowing from time to time. “Doc” returned To Yarra Yarra after breaking his leg in rugby and became captain of Yarra Yarra in 1985/86 and remained captain for a further 3 years before transferring to Albert Park South Melbourne club where he was Captain for a year. “Doc” eventually returned to Yarra where he was of great assistance around the new clubhouse.
