Born in England 5/8/1826 arrived in Victoria in 1850, passed away October 1900
He was involved in the hotel business, a Member of the Melbourne Corporation, a licensing magistrate for the city, and treasurer to the Melbourne hospital. He was connected with many societies, the National Agricultural society, the Benevolent Asylum, the Sailors home, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He was one of the oldest members of the Victorian Racing Club, had been president of the Victorian Football Club and was a prominent figure in the cricket field.
The Australasian Saturday 2 October 1886 on page 20 refers to Councillor James Garton J. P.
A friend and colleague of Mars Buckley which may be the only to the rowing club.
He has no recorded rowing victories.
He was a prominent Melbourne businessman of that period and a supporter of worthy causes in Melbourne.
