Phil started his rowing at Glebe Rowing Club in Sydney as a cox at the age of 9 in 1961, he first came to Victoria as part of the first ever lightweight eight to represent Australia in 1977 has had a long state, national and international career for Victoria spanning from 1977 to 1995. In that time Phil has won 2 world championship bronze medals, over 40 state and national championships and while representing Victoria has won 6 Penrith Cups for interstate lightweight fours. Phil has subsequently made his name in business with the respected boat building business Sykes Racing.
