David Fraumano
Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC), and currently ACT Academy of Sport (ACT)
David started his rowing at Carey Grammar School where he coxed their first crew to a second place.
Whilst still at school and then thereafter, he coxed at Mercantile and steered many crews. However it was evident that his future was in coaching and the transition was quickly made in 2003 with rowers of the same age as himself. His last coxing gigs were the 2003 Mercantile crews and the 2003 Victorian youth eight.
David then set about building the knowledge and experience to be a senior coach and in the process obtained a Master’s degree in Applied Science ‘Sports Coaching’ from the University of Queensland.
During the next 17 years, he has coached countless school, club and National Championship winning crews, as well as athletes on to Victorian as well as Underage and Senior Australian Rowing Teams. He was the Victorian Penrith Cup coach from 2012-2015 and has been a resident U23 coach in at the Australian Institute of Sport preparing lightweight men for U23 Worlds and World University Games and coached at the U23 World Championships. He has also coached internationally at School level in the USA, and Club level taking Mercantile crews to successful campaigns at the Head of the Charles in Boston, and Henley Royal Regatta in the UK.
In 2012, Dave was appointed Head of Rowing at St Catherine’s School in Toorak, Dave built one of the most successful programs Schoolgirl Rowing programs in the country. In his time, St Catherine’s School Senior 1st 8+ has featured in 4 out of 6 Head of the Schoolgirls A Finals, won the 2016 National Schoolgirl 8+ Championship and achieved silver in the same event in 2018 and boasts one of the most talented coaching line-ups on the river bank.
In December 2019, Dave left his club and School positions and moved back to Canberra where he took the position of the High Performance Head Coach of Rowing ACT and the ACT Academy of Sport Rowing Program. He’s presently enjoying coaching a very talented group of athletes and working with an expert support team at ACTAS, integrating S&C, Sports Science, Nutrition, Psychology and administrative staff.
Dave enjoys the challenge of building programs, and working with individuals to get the best out of themselves whether they be coaches, athlete’s or support staff. He believes in a fun, challenging and supportive environment for all who he works with, assisting develop people holistically and over the long term.
