Frank Fogarty

Mercantile Rowing Club (VIC)

The following obituary appeared in the Club's 1998-99 annual report.

Frank Fogarty was the youngest son of John J. Fogarty, a well known Mercantile oarsman in the Club's early years. His eldest brother Tom rowed for the Club in the 1930's.

Frank joined the Club immediately after the second world war and competed in maiden, junior and senior races for some years with success at major metropolitan regattas and in the country. He was always a cheerful and entertaining companion and great value on trips to such regattas as Bairnsdale and Rutherglen.

Although Frank ceased active racing in 1949 he maintained his membership until his death. Until his health failed he was regularly seen at the Sunday morning gatherings and had a consistent in and support for the Club.

Frank commenced his rowing at Xavier College and raced in the five seat of 1938 first crew.

The Fogarty family have been part of Mercantile for four generations at the Club.
