William P Allen

South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC) now Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club (VIC)

William Patrick Allan was a clerk who was born in Hobart, Tasmania, and enlisted on 20th September, 1915 as a bombardier in the 6th Field Artillery Brigade.

William was a new member to South Melbourne, and his only recorded win was a maiden eight at the 1915 Ballarat Regatta for the Third Marks Cup.

After serving in Egypt he was promoted to corporal before arriving in Marseilles in March 1916, and three months later was promoted to sergeant, but by March 1917 had requested to revert to gunner after being transferred through a number of batteries. He was killed on 27th July, 1917, and is buried in Flanders, Belgium.
