Roy sculled at a time when the dominant Victorian sculler was fellow Mercantile member Percy Ivens. In 1907 when Roy competed, Percy won his sixth consecutive sculling Championship. He was consigned to second place in both his Championships starts.
The 1908 Mercantile annual report records that he was lost to competition through his departure to live in the country. The Club wished him well for future success.
