1959 – 49th Men’s European Championships, Macon FRA
Men’s Scull – Fourth
Stuart Mackenzie
Mackenzie was recovering from an emergency operation for a perforated stomach ulcer suffered in Bled Yugoslavia (now Slovenia) only a month beforehand and was far from his peak. Although the operation was a success, he was taking a risk competing and had not undertaken any training. He won his heat but faded in the final. The Russian Viatscheslav Ivanov regained his crown with the German Klaus Von Ferson again finished in second place.
