Launceston Church Grammar ended The Friends' School's 5-year winning streak of the Golden Fleece Cup. Launceston Church Grammar's last win of the Cup was when it was in Fours back in 1956.

Other than an initial burst by Hutchins, it was an all the way win for Grammar with Scotch College holding off a fast-finishing St Virgil's to take second place. The big disappointment was the Friends' School which was the favoured crew in the south of Tasmania to take out the title for the sixth year in a row.
