History of the Tasmanian SATIS Head of the River rowing regatta

1958 SATIS Head of the River

Tamar River 19th April 1958

This was the last time that the Head of the River race was conducted in fours.

The Golden Fleece Cup was presented to the winning crew by the Mayor of Launceston Alderman McGowan.

First Four - The Friends' School won the Golden Fleece Cup for the first time since 1950. The race was conducted in a strong northerly wind and so choppy conditions. Friends School and St Patrick's were the early leaders and remained in the lead for the rest of the race. Launceston Grammar finished strongly to oust Hutchins from third place.

Second Four - The second fours race was won by Launceston Grammar crew which was to have been the school's representative in the first fours. It lost some test races against the eventual school first four. This crew won impressively by a quarter of a length from St Patrick's.

Third Four - Hutchins defeated St Patrick's and St Virgil's. Hutchins survived a protest against it for some early interference.

Third Four:

Hutchins School won the Third Four by 1½ lengths.
