In 1972, the Ferguson Cup was presented for the first time by N. C. Howard for the Under 14 Fours.

The 1972 SA Head of the River saw the following events raced:

- First Eight

- Second Eight

- Open Four

- Open Lightweight Four

- Under 16 Four

- Under 15 Four

- Under 14 Four


St. Peter's College won their first Gosse Shield since 1965, won the Second Eight for the 12th time in-a-row, and the Lightweight and Under 16 Four. Prince Alfred College won the Under 16 Four, King's College won the Under 15 Four and Scotch College won in the Under 14's.
