2017 Under 23 World Championships —
Plovdic, Bulgaria

World Rowing Under-23 Championships were held at the Maritsa River venue in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. 845 athletes from 54 nations gathered for the 21 events. According to FISA, the regatta course is considered to be one of the fastest with the fairest conditions in the world. This venue also hosted the 2015 World Rowing Under-23 Championships and will host the 2018 World Rowing Championships.

The Australian crews trained across the country before departing for Europe and basing themselves at the AIS European Training Centre in Gavirate, Italy for a period of time ahead of the event.

Two of Australia’s crews featured 2016 World Rowing U23 Champions, in the form of Caleb Antill in the Men’s Single Scull and Rob Black in the Men’s Four. In 2016 the duo combined, along with Luke Letcher and Tom Schramko, to win the U23 Men’s Quadruple Scull.

Meanwhile, Australia’s U23 Women’s Quadruple Scull includes three members of the Australian Senior Team who recently won silver and bronze medals at the World Rowing Cups. 2017 World Rowing Cup medallists Genevieve Horton, Rowena Meredith and Caitlin Cronin will be joined in the U23 Women’s Quadruple Scull by Harriet Hudson for this event.

The youngest crew of the team is the exciting combination of the Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull made up of Georgina Masters (20), Wallis Russell (17), Madeleine Williams (18) and Verayna Zilm (19). Russell and Williams were part of Queensland’s Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Scull that won the 2017 Interstate Regatta, and the young looking Quad looks to have plenty of years of racing ahead of it.
