1989 Women's Junior Four meeting Prime Minister Hawke

1989 Women's Junior Four is Congratulated by the Prime Minister Bob Hawke

These Championships saw the race distance extended from 1500 metres to 2000 metres and the women's four become coxless. The weather conditions were difficult and in some cases unfair.

Selections

Due to the problems at the National Championships and cyclone Ned, the World Juniors team was finalized after the Trans Tasman Juniors at Lake Barrington. The initial selections were the men's scull, men's four and women's four. The others were added after the Trans Tasman series.

The women's four won Australia 's first gold medal at any World Junior Championships and they were the toast of the sport. This crew contained three girls from the sport's talent identification programme. It was therefore very pleasing for the AIS, and in particular Reinhold Batschi and Peter Shakespeare, who designed and ran the programme.
