1989 World Championships- Bled Yugoslavia

These Championships saw the return of Adair Ferguson who had not competed at this level since 1986. She won her heat in commanding fashion and established herself as the sculler to beat.

Our hopes were high for her semi-final but disaster struck. After a good start Adair stopped rowing about 150m from the start, threw her head back in despair and then made her way back to the boating area. Her rigger pin had worked loose making competition impossible. Although sabotage was suspected no proof was available.

Following a successful plea to FISA, Adair was allowed to compete in the petite final notwithstanding failure to complete the semi final. She won the petite final in a time comparable to that of the gold medallist.

In one of the highest standard events on the program, the men's double scull raced excellently into fourth place. With the opportunity for warm-up races in Europe beforehand, they would have undoubtedly won a medal. The lack of international competition preparation was critical with this crew.

The women's lightweight four raced well but missed out on a medal by 0.06 seconds. Unfortunately for Reg McKay, current ARC President, he was a judge at the finish and had to interpret the photo finish.

The men's lightweight four raced well also but made the final their worst row of the regatta finishing sixth.

The men's four was eliminated in the semi finals but performed well for their first international race.

At the managerial level, additional medical support in the form of a masseur was introduced for the first time. Further, for the first time, the team took all Australian equipment in recognition of its great improvement.

World Champion West German Eight

German sports correspondents voted this crew as the German team of the Year. The young crew took over from Seoul gold medallists and promptly won the world championship. They joined Boris Becker and Steffi Graf on the stage who won the sportsman and sportswoman of the year.
