Men's Lightweight Eight

David England, John Hawkins, Richard Garrard, Alan de Belin, Ian Porter, Rod Stewart, Phillip Ainsworth, Malcolm Robertson, Phil Gardiner & coach Hubert Frederico

The East Germans again dominated with gold in all women's events and five men's events. For Australia, two of its most enduring international athletes, Peter Antonie and Phil Gardiner, competed for the first time. Both represented Australia in 1992 and Peter Antonie was still selected in 2000.

The women's four was based on a Mosman crew which was formed for the purpose of creating a good Australian crew. Sally Harding and Vivian Rowe moved from Victoria to row with this group under Tim Conrad. This was a big step in those days and showed their determination to race successfully for Australia. Sally Harding and Anne Chirnside went onto be the base of the 1980 Olympic four.

A Women's Double Scull of Denise Phillips and Evelyn Adams, coached by Paul Rowe was originally selected to race. However, the Australian Women's Rowing Council withdrew the crew after Evelyn was disciplined for unlady like behaviour participating in a water fight with some Sydney Rowing Club boys. Initially a life ban, it was revoked after six months, and Evelyn and Denise were selected to compete for Australia at the 1978 World Championships.
